Uplift International’s HR2FP Initiative Statement on Overturning Roe v Wade

A new era has begun for reproductive rights in America.  The radical right political movement to take away abortion rights has been successful and the constitutional right to abortion is no longer protected. Millions of women in states that have banned abortion or severely restricted this medical procedure are at risk of forced pregnancy, which has severe health, economic and social consequences. The recent SCOTUS decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will impact [...]

RBG – An exceptional role model for equal justice under law

We are mourning the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a monumental figure in law and, more recently, became a pop-culture celebrity star outside the court. She will always be remembered as the pioneer jurist who fought for women’s rights and gender equality as an essential part of the human rights agenda and the U.S. Constitution. What a remarkable woman, jurist and exceptional role model. She showed us that it takes [...]

Racism is a Health and Human Rights Issue

Dear friends, We are living through a defining moment in history.  The dual crises of the viral pandemic and civil unrest are causing all of us to be sad, angry and exhausted.  In the middle of a deadly and disabling viral epidemic in America caused by COVID-19, we are experiencing historic civil disorder around the U.S. in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  Let’s be clear, the violent police killing of [...]

The Fourth of July and Trump

There is a fundamental link between the current political environment created by President Trump, his cronies and July 4.  I started to think about this relationship when a friend said that I should celebrate July 4 and be happy because Trump has nothing to do with it.  Wrong! July 4 is the anniversary of our nation’s independence.  We fought and won a battle to free ourselves from the British monarchy that was oppressing our freedoms.  [...]

Reflections on the 2018 New York City Women’s March

There were crowds of people on the subway going to the rally and march on the Upper West Side of New York City on Saturday, January 20. Some were carrying signs claiming women’s rights and women power, while some focused on the Trump policies that discriminate against women, LGBT, immigrants. The 2017 pussy hats were everywhere, presumably worn by so many of the same people who dusted them off and put them on again, not [...]

2017: The #MeToo Movement and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

A Message from the President of Uplift International It has been a rough year.  The Trump administration has imposed sweeping policy changes globally and locally that adversely affect women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).  At the same time, we have seen a growing movement of empowered women claiming their rights in 2017. This should give us hope. The Trump administration instituted a draconian policy that undermines women’s right to reproductive health.  [...]
