About Uplift International
Improving health and human rights has been the goal of Uplift International for 20 years.
We work in low and middle-income countries in the health and legal sectors. We also work in the U.S. Our focus is on the most vulnerable populations, those who need protection to access scientifically-based health information and services. We address the most urgent needs of communities, including those of women, children, people with disabilities and the poor.
Our early programs were located in Southeast Asia where we partnered with local NGOs– not only to provide assistance but to build local capacity– so the most vulnerable would have better health and well-being at the local level. We have implemented programs in emergency humanitarian aid, child health and women’s reproductive health and rights.
Uplift International is located in Seattle, Washington, a major hub for global health and social justice innovation, advocacy and networking.
Uplift International implements health programs with a justice perspective. It is not good enough to provide healthcare to some populations and not others. We should ask, “Are the most vulnerable accessing those same services?” We advocate to uphold the dignity of every individual and this includes providing the most accurate, scientifically-based health information and quality, affordable health services.
Uplift International’s programs improve health access and protect the most vulnerable.
Advocate for the human right to family planning in the U.S. and around the world.
Uplift International advocates for women’s and girls’ freedom to decide about their own reproductive health. Women’s health must include access to quality, affordable and comprehensive reproductive health services.
Train professionals in ethical practices of medicine, research and public health policy.
Uplift International’s experts build capacity of professionals and institutions, like universities and government agencies, to protect those that need protection in research experiments and set standards of ethics for doctors, nurses and other health workers so all individuals can receive quality care without discrimination. We must improve knowledge through research, but it does not have to take advantage of those who do not have the option to say ‘no’. Our bioethics program goes beyond the individual and has activities that seek to improve disparities in health among different populations.Partner with local organizations for the most impact and the most sustainability. We are innovative and interdisciplinary. We work across professional disciplines—like medicine, public health and law—and we work with different types of civil society groups to educate and advocate for improved health and rights for all.
