Speaking to those present at the protests, activist and academic Andrea Dibben from the Women’s Rights Foundation explained why the courts were used as a backdrop.
She said protesters assembled at the courts after a mother and a victim of domestic violence were prosecuted by the police and charged with having an abortion.
“For us, you are not a criminal. You are our sister. You are one of us. Whoever you are, wherever you are, we are angry and disgusted with what you had to go through, and you have our support and solidarity,” she said.
Note: Malta is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea close to the boot of Italy, with a population of about 516,000. Malta gained its independence from British rule in 1964; its capital, Valetta, is known as the first planned European city (1565).
