                           Humanitarian Crisis in Pakistan 

Pakistan is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis since the Rwandan genocide 20 years ago. Violence between the military and the Taliban has created a mass exodus with more than 3 million people fleeing their homes in the Swat Valley.  Many have left with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.   Millions are now living in the Mardan District, some in camps and many outside the camps in abandoned buildings and temporary shelter.  According to the UK-based NGO, Islamic Relief, 3.7 million IDPs (internally displaced persons) are based outside camps and most of them are in the Mardan District of the North West Frontier Province.

Dr. Raana Zahid is Uplift International’s Country Representative.  She is leading our team in providing aid to the many IDPs living outside the camps in Mardan District.  She and her team of volunteers from a local organization, DIYA-Pakistan, are providing lifesaving food, water, medicines and medical services to hundreds of women and their families.  The Uplift International team is serving families that are not being served by the UN and other organizations.  We are finding groups of 20-60 families living together and in need of aid.  Dr. Raana and the team are seeing newborns dying, children who are dehydrated and malnourished and pregnant women who are very sick.
